Pre-Opening Procurement 2.0?

The landscape of pre-opening procurement is changing rapidly. The modern procurement company is not just the tool to get the cheapest goods at the regular suppliers for properties anymore.
Individual hotels, boutique hotels and the smaller, more boutique style hotel chains are in the forefront of understanding the need, expertise and experience of a good procurement company.

Historic role

Ten years ago procurement merely was copy paste, going from one pre-opening hotel to the other. It did not matter much if a hotel was opening in Berlin, Rome or Paris. The infrastructure and environment were almost the same. Today, my company approaches each pre-opening as an individual entity and brand new project, often in places where we have not been before. By hiring local knowledge at each project we are able to talk the local language and understand the local needs. Hotel owners do understand more and more that the procurement company is able to support them from the initial stages of the development and design of the property. As this is still the right moment to make changes in the drawings and determine mistakes and emissions in the total design.

Partnership

A decade ago, we were the regular procurement company that came in when the FF&E and OS&E budgets were final, went to work for best pricing and delivered the products. Nowadays, we are becoming one of the solid partners during the whole process of building the property, including discussions about routing, product choice, sustainability, delivery and construction and much more. Meaning that our role is changing from purchasing to consulting! This is a win-win situation both for the owner and the procurement company as communication lines are short, changes still can be made in the early stages of the design and we can use our expertise on what we do best! The gain in time and money always is considerable in favour of the owner!
